inspired by the tutorial of omno van braam i basically reproduced the same steps with maya: create a cube with subdivision width, height & depth 1, select one face and add divisions to the face (division levels = 2), select the 4 center faces and collapse them to the center. now select the center vertex of the ‘star’ which appears on the face as a result of the previous step. chamfer this vertex and adjust the border with the scale tool if necessary to make the hole somewhat rounder (turn on ‘remove the face after chamfer’). select the border of the hole, extrude it without transformation (press enter when active) and move the new edges inwards. mesh > fill hole and in a final step bevel all necessary edges before adding a subdiv proxy to smoothen everything. check out the result:
