reference copies in maya

3ds max offers next to copy and instance an additional possibility to duplicate objects: reference. i was looking in maya if there’s something comparable, here’s how i could reproduce quite similar instanced object behavior: create an object, call duplicate special and enable duplicate input connections, which connects all the input nodes of the original and the copy. that means all changes of one object will be reflected in the other, but you can make individual changes now by adding new input channels through changes. very helpful if you want to add details on an instanced object, but you don’t want to affect the original.
