i like the subdiv proxy a lot! not because of this wouldn’t be possible in 3ds max through a modifier (turbosmooth), but because it’s so extremely stable & configurable regarding the edges with continuity, preserving hard edges etc. works just like a charm! it is recommended to put all proxy objects in a separate layer so you can easily turn them off and can manipulate them without accidentally touching the high-res which can cause messy results when adding new vertices to the object. combining the subdiv proxy with the crease tool endless modelling solutions are possible by keeping the mesh density as low as possible.
