you know it: global illumination looks fancy but is terribly slow and sometimes just not flexible enough for your needs especially when it comes to non-realistic renders. if you still want to profit from some of the advantages of global illumination even with your default scanline renderer then the script lightrigger might be handy, which provides a draft-quality. unlike full-featured global illumination renderers, lightrigger uses standard 3ds max lights and components to simulate only the diffuse interreflection component of global illumination. check out screenshots and demo videos at terratools.
