while digging some old 3d world magazines i encountered an interesting article from pete draper on how to create a ball which is surrounded by a bunch of wires and how to animate the ball through those wires. sounds complicated may be your first thought but with some easy steps this idea can be achieved without any brain damage: create a geosphere, add some vertical lines (make them renderable, without optimize), normalize spline modifier to those lines, noise modifier, twist modifier (720 degrees, spherical) – at the end put a xform modifier on top of the normalize spline modifier and then with the right seetings you should be pleased with some fancy results. check out my sample:
