i really didn’t thought this is possible, but neil blevins found a way to do non linear displacement in 3dsmax. basically it’s achieved by using a volume select and deforming the selection with a modifier – nice idea! let’s try this, too.
create a plane, add turbosmooth and tune up the iterations, add a displace modifier: use a celluar map as the displacement map. now add a volume select modifier to your stack and choos vertex in the stack selection level – move the gizmo a bit up, turn on soft selection and now you can see that mostly the displaced sections are selected.
now add for example a push modifier and: look at that! the displacement has now ‘undercut’ section which would not have been possible with linear displacement. play around with different modifiers (ffd) but also with the soft selection curve, you’ll have fantastic results!
