displacement fun: crater ground

i start liking the displacement modifier more and more. it can save so much time! today’s displacement experiment is a crater ground. first of all create a simple plane and add a turbo smooth modifier. crank up the iterations, since you’ll need all the tiny faces to displace. create a cellular material and fiddle around with the cell characteristics: circular, size: 50, spread: 0.05. and now – that’s the cool thing – activate ‘enable color map‘ in the output rollout and change the curve into something like this:

now add a displace modifier to the plane and throw this material to its map slot.

nice and easy to do, isn’t it?
