importing 16bit height maps in 3dsmax

you may have experienced the problem that other tools like special world builder tools can export 16bit grayscale raw files etc. to use them in 3dsmax you can import them (open as…) as raw files (import for example a .r16 file as a raw file, set channel to 1 and depth to 16bit) and then re-save the image as a 16 bit png file. this new png can be imported by 3dsmax i recommend to use the displace modifier, not the map channel – it works better and you can see a preview in the viewport.
